The word consultant comes from the Latin word “consultare” which means “to ask for advice” – and that is exactly the role that you as a consultant take on for a customer. You come with completely unique knowledge and competence that a company needs to solve a task. The duration of an assignment can vary from a single week to several months, and therefore the consultant role differs from a completely ordinary employment. Therefore, not everyone can see themselves in this position either.
These personality traits characterize a good consultant
- Adaptable
As a consultant, you have to be dynamic and aware that the environment can change depending on which companies and tasks you have to consult. Here you must be prepared to be able to work in different teams with different purposes and with different time horizons. Perhaps you prefer to do things in one particular way, but your customers prefer another – and so it is important to be able to adapt to their needs. It is therefore a key quality to be adaptable so that you can easily fit into different settings.
- Accommodating
When you join a team as an external consultant, it is crucial that you are open and curious about the task(s) to be solved and about the team you will be part of. By having an open mind and bringing good energy to the customer, the collaboration will be more successful.
- Thriving as an ambassador
When you are employed as a consultant, you also represent the company that rents you out. Therefore, it is an important character trait that you are diplomatic and can act as an ambassador for the company when you are out in the field. Among other things, it is important to be able to act professionally and be able to put the customer’s needs above your own.
